This copperplate engraving features a bird's eye view of the Swedish capital. Located by the Baltic Sea, Stockholm is built on 14 islands and features one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval city centers. During 17th and 18th centuries, a number of foreign architects were recruited for major building projects. Because Stockholm was not involved in the great wars of the 20th century, the historic buildings are largely conserved and in turn, the skyline depicted here is quite recognizable, even today.
