Gorgeous, rather unsual pair of side chairs with Egyptianizing details. Beginning in the Napoleonic period, objects decorated in Egyptian taste were the height of fashion, as a result of the Emporer's conquests abroad. This vogue for pharoahs and papyrus motifs is maintained right through the Art Deco Period, when these chairs were produced. Such influences can be seen in the carved and painted woodwork of this pair of chairs, as well as in their (likely once-replaced) upholstery pattern. Acquired from a Los Angeles collector.
